The Weight of Water - Olivia Bartley
Olivia is my friend & she is divine! She kept me sane through many long hours working for the Government as a contractor.

Tommy D is the biggest cool idiot that I know, mainly because he is the guy that introduces me to music “the kids” are listening to these days. I still don’t “get” LCD Soundsystem but I am predictable in other areas; for example if it involves female rappers being lewd, has the word ass in the title or JUS 1 H0t BAsS LiNNNNNe, well then I’m sold.
This song is excellent!
It’s called Get Yo Ass On The Flo’ by Johnny Polygon.
Christina Aguilera I am
This song was co-written with Sia. I really like it, it’s nothing exciting but lovely nonetheless. ‘Tis very I am woman, hear me purr. I think.
The Bitters Travelin’ Girl
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS SONG!
"Just remember to fall in love, there’s nothing else."
The Chemical Brothers Swoon
The Pogues Boys from the County Hell
Brenna & I are DJing on Friday night, and I think I should bestow the “kids” with this song. They’ll probably hate it but I…. will lose my mind and dance enough to make up for everyone.
I blame Talia for putting me onto this song. I have an addiction to it. It is just the most wonderful of songs. And the spoken word part in the middle always turns me into a puddle.
Home is when I’m alone with you. xx
"Thinking of him each day when he is miles away, you know it won’t serve you well, it’s better for time to tell… you can’t please somebody, can’t please somebody else until you learn to look after yourself, you can’t be somebody, can’t be somebody else ‘til you’ve learned your lesson, put it on the shelf"
Sarah Blasko Hold My Heart
This is me.
As you can see, I’m a redhead, a carrot-top, a ginger, a “ranga” - ONE OF THOSE, ONE OF THOSE. I’m also 27, thus I feel as though I’m past the “worst” of being singled out (although there’s only one person in this world I can handle calling me a ‘ranga’). Yes I was teased and ridiculed for being ginge, you were probably teased for something as well. So no biggie. This is my natural reaction mind you, but despite this I completely broke down in tears while watching M.I.A’s new filmclip for many reasons.
Watch the VERY NSFW clip before reading on.

You’re back! Are you okay? I hope so. It broke my fragile, little heart.
‘Born Free’ director, Romain Gavras has enlisted a group of redheaded boys to be symbols of an ethnic minority, they are preyed upon by American soldiers and have been solely targeted for their appearance/race. They are depicted as the victim, not the aggressor. It’s not hating or portraying gingers in a negative light by any means and I can’t believe the sheer amount of people clogging up twitter and facebook that can not even remotely digest the basic form of symbolism Gavras has used.
I’m trying not sound too ridiculous or emotional for that matter, but I feel deeply honoured that in this case redheads were chosen to represent minorities who have been beaten, tortured or killed during civil wars. Yes, I can see how intentionally controversial this clip is trying to be but nonetheless M.I.A has thankfully sparked heated debates as a result, and for people to concentrate on the depiction of redheads is a complete waste of time. Redheads haven’t been killed for their haircolour in masses for hundreds of years. Us pale-skinned peoples are doing okay.
If you know anything about M.I.A. then you’d know about her personal support for the Tamil people who I believe are the minority represented. I personally don’t know enough about the Tamil/Sri Lankan Government conflict to write about it in depth thus I can not support Mathangi Arulpragasa’s political views, but you can, like me, click here to learn more.
UPDATE: [via amq]
I found this video very interesting. Not only the bleak yet stark cinematography and the music, but mainly the intense darker elements that echo strong throughout the video. It’s actually a brilliant little production considering the deeper themes it tackles - the idea of apartheid, of suffering and undue hardship forced upon an independent people, born free, yet enslaved by the very trivialities of their existence; in this case using ginger hair as a metaphor for something deeper… a shout out and call against discrimination as a whole. By using the purposefully inconsequential trait of being red-haired, the piece puts a mirror up against the fear-driven society we live in, and how we form stereotypes and discriminate against a common people, irrespective of their true beliefs and personal struggles, irrespective of their very humanity.
MICF 2010 Theme Songs (so far)…..
- Akon “Beautiful” - Cardinal Burns do a hilarious sketch that uses this song to perfection.
- Major Lazer “Pon De Floor” - DANCING. MANIA. Daggering in the Hi-Fi bar during a week night? Don’t mind if I do.
- Ludacris “Get Back” - Arj uses this at the end of his show, sure Tropic Thunder used this song first but it’s STILL. EPIC.
Paul Simon + Wally De Backer = HEAVEN ON A NU-FOLK STICK.
“Graceland” is one of my favourite songs. I hope you enjoy the cover.
